    1. Tampopo. Juzo Itami.

We watch a lot of movies, but I can't say exactly how they influence our music. I guess being in someone else's world is the equivalent to listening to a good record, and a lot of times it's preferable to exist somewhere else. Sometimes when writing songs, we explain sound visually, too, in terms of color or the images that it provokes.I first saw Tampopo when I was rather young and it left a big impression on me. It feels like a happy dream, where the characters and scenes overlap, and you feel fed and validated by all these hedonistic images of food and sex, and eventually death.I don't know how we hit upon the idea to remix the love scene, but the contrast between these sensual images and our dissonance feels like the right amount of tension and comedy. Here is another scene that turns ramen eating into a fetish.

    2. Rocky. John G. Avildsen.

We love underdogs. I wrote this movie off for a long time because I thought it was cheesy. There isn't much in the way of character development, and Sylvester Stallone's slur can get annoying, but it is a classic for a reason. Seventies Philadelphia looks just so damn griitty, and the fact that they shot it on film makes the colors bleed beautifully, like a boxer's face.

    3. The Godfather.

We kind of have a problem with anything that has sequels, in that we have to watch ALL of them. Again, this was another franchise that I felt I could never get into, but maybe it's a bit of homesickness for America that's helped me to reconsider these films. Johannes likes the ultimate justice that falls down upon a sympathetic bad guy. He has a choice to make, and he takes it, but even godfathers can't escape karma.

D'amour.

    Merci Sarah.

    1. The Lodge. Gunilla Heilborn and Mårten Nilsson

I am very fond of the movies that the couple Gunilla Heilborn and Mårten Nilsson have made together. They are hilarious in it's sublimity and cleaver and pretentious and playful at the same time. Also the music by Kim Hiorthøy is really smart.

    2.Dasies (Sedmikrásky).Vera Chytilova

I love this movie to bits! It's fun, cool and smart and it stars two young women who live their lives completely on their own terms right to the very end. It's lovely to see and it changes from black and white to colour to really psychedelic and arty segments.

    3.Cléo de 5 à 7.Agnès Varda

Because it's sad, beautiful in it's simplicity, about a woman who gets her death verdict by a fortune teller. Michel Legrand soundtrack is just lovely.

    1. Providence. Alain Resnais.

Of course, you sometimes associate a film very strongly with the time in your life you first saw it. I first saw this movie on my laptop in a horrible flat in 2010 at a time when Dirk Bogarde became something of a patron saint to me. I was going through a difficult period romantically and in some way that I still can't explain, this film spoke to me of that. Its a strange film in that it is, I think, authentically Poetic and dream like. Much of it takes place in the Writer's imagination (played by Geilgud) and its the best representation of the writer's thought process Ive ever seen on screen. The sets are intruiging and Dirk is delicious - arch, Affected and suprememly stylised and beautifully dressed by YSL. I'll go on re watching this movie for the rest of my life. Its raised an answer that I need to find the question for.

    2. Take The Money And Run. Woody Allen.

My introduction to Woody allen was via the BBC late film, when as a child I would scour the channells late at night on my tiny B&W portable TV in much the same way as generations before me did with radios. I couldn't believe it the first time I saw this film ; it was so smart and funny and comical and odd that I remember thinking 'The world can't be that bad if people make films like this'. It still makes me laugh and I watch it every year on my birthday.

    3.Le Testament D'Orphée. Jean Cocteau.

I probably love Cocteau for all the reasons some people dislike him - his flightiness, his 'dabbling', his femininity, his lightness, his self interest...he makes me happy and is a companion to me in my life. This is my favourite film of his. You can tell he dealing with his coming death in it and the imagery are highlited by this context of sadness..its like he's grieving for his real death in advance..the scene where he walks out of the garage door into the night and a dog barks in the distance...this really moves me for some reason...

    Merci Anthony.

For art I enjoy Paul Klee.....I like the fact that he was a master but his work still had a childlike quality with a real control of colour.

for film i enjoy "Pan's Labyrinth" by Guillermo Del Torro, I love the fairy tale mixed with post civil war brutality and it's fable like content.

Music Into the mystic - Van Morrison Just connects with me on so many levels and his best vocal ever

    Keith:

For a painting I have chosen Three Musicians by Picasso. I first saw it at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and thought it looked like it should be the cover of some cool jazz LP like Dave Brubeck or something. I got a print and it took pride of place above my fireplace, it brings back memories of New York and it was only once it had been hanging up there a while that I noticed the dog lying under the table and then I liked it even more.

For a film I like The Royal Tenenbaums by Wes Anderson, again evokes New York really well and it has an amazing cast including Gene Hackman, Ben Stiller and Bill Murray. Gwyneth Paltrow is good in it too. It sort of reminds me of some of JD Salinger's books, notably Franny and Zooey which used to be a favourite of mine. Plus it has a great soundtrack from the Ramones to the Velvet Underground and the scene featuring Elliott Smith's music was sadly prescient.

    1. Fantastic Mr. Fox

I personally like all Wes Anderson films, but choosing all of them for this list would be cheating. This movie is perfect. The end.

     2. Toy Story 3

This is a very important movie for everyone born in the 90's. It brings back a lot of memories and makes you realize how much you've grown since watching the first Toy Story. I totally cried at the end.

    3. Waste Land

This is the latest documentary I've seen, and it's by far the most emotional and beautiful. Not only does it shed light on harsh realities, but it shows how art is truly vital to the world and furthers proves that hard work can make anything possible. I cried during this movie too.

    4. Blue Valentine

I like how simple this movie is. All it is a great writing and two amazing actors. A lot of American films aren't being made like this anymore, and it's a shame.

    5. It's Kind Of A Funny Story

I genuinely loved this movie. I have no idea why people didn't like it. It was a perfect blend of funny, sad, and adorable. This is such a great feel good movie.
