The Orchids

Juillet fêtait ses artifices. Quel mois séduisant, Dieu, quel mois séduisant. Il se retrouvait devant le port, il avait avec lui un tas de lettres. De jeunes comoriennes aux longues jambes de nuit traînaient près de l'eau plaquée d'hydrocarbures. Il s'en voulait de son peu de discrétion mais balança tout à la mer. C'était mieux ainsi. Il grilla une gauloise et marcha un moment. Plus tard, dans la nuit sous les voûtes, il dansait avec une fille timide portant un khôl épais, voilant tout à fait ses yeux noisettes. Elle semblait ignorer sa beauté. Elle portait le tatouage d'une sauterelle, elle écoutait Bahaus et The Orchids.

Paul se mit à lui parler de Juliette Greco et du parfum de savon de sa nourrice. Le petit matin était frais, il tenait fort son petit corps contre lui. Il avait envoyé  toutes ces lettres comme des fleurs maladives dans une eau noire, noire comme l'oubli. Dehors, Juillet fêtait encore ses artifices ...

The Orchids est une émouvante carte postale que l'on reçoit toujours dans les moments forts de nos vies. Un des secrets, très beau, gardé par le fabuleux label Sarah Records. Quelles oeuvres ont influencé cette pop fragile et indélébile ? Le groupe ouvre son coeur et nous livre l'étendue de ses amours artistiques.

Music Into the mystic - Van Morrison Just connects with me on so many levels and his best vocal ever

For a painting I have chosen Three Musicians by Picasso. I first saw it at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and thought it looked like it should be the cover of some cool jazz LP like Dave Brubeck or something. I got a print and it took pride of place above my fireplace, it brings back memories of New York and it was only once it had been hanging up there a while that I noticed the dog lying under the table and then I liked it even more. 

 For a film I like The Royal Tenenbaums by Wes Anderson, again evokes New York really well and it has an amazing cast including Gene Hackman, Ben Stiller and Bill Murray. Gwyneth Paltrow is good in it too. It sort of reminds me of some of JD Salinger's books, notably Franny and Zooey which used to be a favourite of mine. Plus it has a great soundtrack from the Ramones to the Velvet Underground and the scene featuring Elliott Smith's music was sadly prescient.
